A Viking ships single sail and mast could be easily raised and lowered; this was particularly useful in ship to ship sea battles, where the mast and sail were unnecessary encumbrances. Lowering the mast also allowed Viking ships to pass under low, wooden or stone bridges. With the flexibility to use either sails or ores, Viking ships were immune to the possibility of being beckoned and could manage even the most difficult conditions of wind and current. They were the sea going masterpieces of their age, and two examples of these extraordinary vessels can still be seen today.

The Vikings were the last pagans in Europe, their pantheistic religion tended to be flexible and individualistic. Because of this, they held many views about life after death.one was that the dead lived on in the grave itself, another was that the dead went on a journey from the grave. much like the Egyptian pharaoh’s, the more powerful and wealthy Vikings were buried with a supply of food and all manner of personal possessions, ornaments, treasures, farm implements, animals and even serpents. This was meant to help them on their journey to the other world and to allow them to keep up appearances there. If the dead were powerful and rich enough, they were buried in a complete Viking ship that would carry them on their final journey.
